Owls Earn First Win of the Year vs Husson

Bangor ME – The UMPI Owls Softball team traveled to Bangor, Maine to play their second doubleheader of the year vs Husson University. The Owls earned their first win of the year in the second game of the day. Husson took the first game 4-2 while the Owls bounced back with a 2-1 victory the second game.

Game 1

4-2, Husson

First year Abby Hooper (Machias, ME) got her first career start, pitching three innings with only one earned run allowed. The Eagles started Jen Jones, who pitch all seven innings and had six strikeouts on the game. Senior Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, CA) got her first look on the mound this year after coming off an injury. Garcia finished the game with three strikeouts and allowing only one earned run.

The Eagles lead off Sydney Ames was able to make her way to third after she got on base with a single. Husson was able to bring her home with a single to give them a one-point lead through one inning. Back to back errors by the Owls in the second, led to another run for the Eagles. Another run game in the second inning from a single by Ames. Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) was able to bring Marissa Valdivia Reagle (Seattle, WA) home in the third to give the Owls their first points of the game.

In the fifth inning, Husson extended their lead to 4-1. UMPI freshman Dalaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL) came up big with a triple in the sixth inning. Terry was able to bring her home, but that was not enough as the Owls eventually lost 4-2. Anfinson had her another solid performance at the plate going 2-3 with a RBI to go along with her triple.

Game 2

2-1, UMPI

Marissa Valdivia Reagle (Seattle, WA) got her first win on the mound in the second game. Pitching 5.2 innings and only allowing four hits with three strikeouts. Sydney Ames started the game for the Eagles. Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, CA) came in to put the game away in the top of the sixth inning.

After the first two inning with only one hit between the two teams, the Eagles scored first after getting on base from a single by Kenzie Dore. Dore would score from third off a wild pitch before the Owls could get out of the inning. An immediate answer by the Owls in the bottom of the third. Halle Gardner (Murray, UT) scored the run off a double by Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) tying the game at one.

In the sixth inning both team were able to stop the drought and get on base in scoring position. Garcia subbed in for Reagle, finishing the game with 111 pitches. With Garcia on the mound, the Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs. Diaz was able to get the out off a shot down the third base line. Capitan Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) hit a shot down the right field line and making her way to third base. After the triple by Strout, the Owls were in control with their RBI leader Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) at the plate. Terry hit a shot toward second base; the Eagles second baseman was not able to get the throw to the catcher in time as Stout scorer, giving the Owls the lead. The Owls defense put the game away with a tough catch by both outfielders Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE) and Dalaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL) to get the first two outs before a routine grounder finished the game.

The Owls will head down to Bangor once again next weekend with another set of doubleheaders. These with be both teams North Atlantic Conference games of the year.
