Presque Isle, ME – LaDerrick ("Dareek") Roberts has committed to attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the fall of 2021. Dareek comes from the powerhouse Belfast, Maine cross country and track and field programs and is a spring specialist in the 200m to 800m distances. He will also figure in relays and is one of the stronger recruits for the Owls cross country team.
Roberts decided to attend UMPI as the University is a smaller program where he felt he could make a real difference. Roberts states "I'm ready to get started and get up there. I have so many goals for myself and especially the team in my next four years of schooling and for these two sports. I can't wait to see what we can do. It's definitely going to be a big change and difference between high school and college, but I'm ready to work and achieve everything under the sun I'm capable of".
Head coach of both cross country and track and field at UMPI, Coach Chris Smith speaks on Roberts commitment. "Dareek is the type of athlete we are looking for in our athletics programs as he is driven and very goal oriented," says Coach Smith. "I can see him developing into a team leader as he works through his college years."
Belfast coach Jo-Ann Neely indicates that she feels that Dareek has that strong work ethic in saying that, "LaDerrick ran Cross-country in the fall and he has been working extremely hard this [track] season. He mentioned at the beginning of the season that he would like to be a member of the 4 X 400m relay. It has been exciting to see his hard work pay off. He recently ran 54.11. His time is dropping due to his hard work". Coach Smith points to Dareek's team focus in that Roberts looks for his teammates "to have the same aspirations as me". Coach Neeley further states that Roberts "is a great teammate" who "also gets excited when his teammates do well".
Roberts will be entering the Social Work program at the University. The Owls Athletics Community is happy to welcome Dareek!
