Belfast, ME - Many of the UMPI Owls were running in familiar territory on Saturday in attending the Maine Maritime Academy Mariner Invitational held at the Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast. The site for many high school races was easily navigated from memory by many Owls runners who are from Maine.
Valentine Degiovanni (Fr. Nice, France) was again the race winner as she outdistanced her nearest rival by 54 seconds, finishing at 20:54. Irina Norkin (Fr. Denmark, ME) also placed in the top 10, finishing in that position at 22:48. The scoring for the Owls was rounded out by Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME), (16th, 23:47), a much improved Kendra Silvers (So. North Berwick, ME), (17th, 24:22), as was the fifth scorer Chenoa Jackson (Sr. Wilton, ME), (29th, 26:29). Ashley Morton (So. Castle Hill, ME) was the sixth Owl in at 27:58, good enough for 34th in the 48 runner field. The Owls finished in third team position (71 points) behind Husson University (42), U-Maine at Farmington (43), and ahead of Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (92) and MMA (99).
The next test for UMPI will be the Pop Crowell Invitational Invitational to be held over six kilometers at Gordon College in Wenham, MA on September 22nd.
