LYNDON, VT – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (5-22) dropped a tight match to host Lyndon State (8-9) three sets to one, before sweeping the Johnson State Badgers (2-19) three sets to zero in NAC play on Saturday.
Lyndon State def. UMPI 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 26-24)
The Owls would have to fight back in the first set, as the Hornets would run off seven points to start the match and put UMPI in a hole. The visitors would do just that and slowly creep back into it, eventually taking a 22-21 lead. After surrendering that lead due to a small Lyndon State run, the Owls would tie it at 24, only to see the home team take the set with two straight kills.
The second set was similar to the first one in the sense that the Owls found themselves trailing for the majority. Their comeback effort in this one would not be as effective, even though UMPI trailed by as much as seven, they would eventually cut the lead down and trail 21-20 in the late stages, but once again Lyndon State would slam the door, grabbing a two sets to zero lead.
The third set was a back and forth affair between the two teams. The biggest lead by either team was four, when the Hornets would go up by a score of 19-15. A 10-3 run would help the Owls force a fourth set, as they would take the third by a score of 25-22.
The fourth saw the Hornets fall behind early, then use a couple of runs of their own to build a lead. Down 14-9 the Owls would fight back and the set would be tight towards the end. The two teams would be knotted up at 24, but Lyndon State would lock down the set and the match with a 26-24 win.
Senior Abby Jewett (Bass Harbor, ME) would finish with 20 kills and 18 digs for the Owls. Hannah Williams (SO, Park Falls, NS) would end up with seven kills and 18 digs. Esmeralda Galvan (FR, Bullhead City, AZ) would tally 25 digs, while Cheyenne McMillen (FR, Bells, TX) would gather 22 digs and four service aces. Laura Aroz (FR, Tucson, AZ) would contribute 21 assists in the effort.
UMPI def. Johnson State 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-17)
The Owls would jump on the Badgers in the first set, opening the match with a 7-3 run and never looking back. UMPI would hold a comfortable lead throughout and be up by a score of 23-10, before closing out the set.
Presque Isle would continue their run in the second set, once again jumping out to a 7-3 lead before the Badgers managed to claw back into it briefly. A small run would close the gap to an 8-6 lead, but the Owls would soar from there, building a 20-10 lead before taking the second set by a score of 25-14.
Johnson State would come out stronger to begin the third set, as it would be tied at four before the Owls would go on a small run to build a 10-5 lead. The deficit would never shrink below five, as the Owls would take the third set 25-17, and the match 3-0.
Jewett would lead the Owls in kills again with 19. Williams would add seven kills and eight digs, while McMillen would record nine digs. Aroz would be credited with 27 assists in the match.
The Owls will host U Maine Fort Kent on Wednesday in doubleheader action. The first match will start at 5 PM and it will be senior night for the Owls.
