PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Volleyball team (3-19) hosted the Unity College Rams (15-6) on Saturday afternoon. The visitors would take the doubleheader by the scores of 3-1 and 3-0.
Unity def. UMPI – 3-1 (20-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-22)
The Owls got off to a promising start and looked like they would be the team to beat in the first set. The home team would double up on the Rams, collecting 12 kills to Unity's 6 and UMPI would win the first set 25-20. Things took a turn in the second set as Unity would roll to a 25-13 win to even it up. UMPI would rally in the third and fourth sets to make it interesting, but it would not be enough.
The Rams' Jacklyn Collins (JR, Rifle, CO) would lead all players with 15 kills and 31 digs. Emily MacDonald (SO, Brockton, MA) would add ten kills. For the Owls senior Abby Jewett (Bass Harbor, ME) would set the pace with 13 kills and 23 digs. Hannah Williams (SO, Park Falls, NS) and Cheyenne McMillen (FR, Bells, TX) would each add six kills, while Williams would contribute 17 digs and McMillen would tally 16. Sara Boies (FR, Baileyville, ME) would also have a solid defensive effort with 16 digs, to go along with her five kills.
Unity def. UMPI – 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-19)
The Rams would keep their momentum going in the second match, while the Owls would try and play catch-up to no avail. Despite just committing one attacking error and collecting nine kills in the first set, UMPI could not muster enough offense to overcome the Unity team. UMPI's offense would stagnate in the second set, allowing the Rams to build a lead, and the Owls would not generate enough opportunities in the third, despite a late rally.
Collins would lead the Rams once again, this time with 13 kills and 6 digs. MacDonald would produce nine kills, with one solo block and five assisted solo blocks. Jazmyn Atteberry (SR, Westport, ME) would also add five assisted blocks to the effort. Jewett would tally 13 kills and 20 digs for the Owls in the effort. Williams would add 15 digs as the Owls would fall to 3-19 overall.
The Owls will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to U Maine Machias for doubleheader action starting at 5:30.
