Owls Drop a Pair

WORCESTER, MA – The Maine-Presque Isle Volleyball team (1-8) travelled to Becker College (4-2) to play in a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon.  They opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Pine Manor (2-4) before dropping their second set to the host school 3-0.

Pine Manor def. UMPI 3-2 (25-14, 25-22, 20-25, 24-26, 15-2)

Errors plagued the Owls in the first set, as they committed seven attacking errors that allowed the Gators to build a lead and take the first set 25-14.  While the problems continued for the Owls, especially early in the second set, Pine Manor's attack grew less effective, and they were credited with 8 attacking errors.  Despite being down just one point late, the Owls weren't able to take advantage and dropped the second set 25-22.  The third set looked to be more of the same, as it started out as a back-and-forth between the two teams.  Finding themselves down 9-5, the UMPI team would turn the tables and rattle off eight straight points to take charge, with three different players recording kills in that stretch.  The Owls would remain in the lead throughout the rest of the third set, taking it 25-20.  UMPI would find themselves down throughout much of the fourth set, and by as many as seven before they were able to fight back into the game.  Down 19-12 the Owls would go on an 8-2 run and close it to a one-point deficit.  With the set tied at 24, Sara Boies (FR, Baileyville, ME) would record a kill and Esmeralda Galvan (FR, Bullhead City, AZ) would serve an ace to force a fifth set.  The Gators dominated the final set, recording nine kills to take the match by a score of 3-2.

Hannah Williams (SO, Park Falls, NS) would lead the Owls with 14 kills and record 18 digs.  Abby Jewett (SR, Bass Harbor, ME) also had a strong match, recording 13 kills and 24 digs.  Laura Aroz (FR, Tuscon, AZ) ended with 21 assists, while Galvan would add 14 digs to the effort.

Becker def. UMPI 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-9)

The Owls were out-manned in the second match of the day as 18 Becker players saw the floor to the Owls seven.  In the first set UMPI would hold a brief lead before the Hawks would go on an 8-2 run that would give them control of the first set.  They would go on to win it 25-16.  Becker used that momentum to hold a lead through most of the second set and would find themselves up by a score of 24-16.  Cheyenne McMillen (FR, Bells, TX) would lead a comeback attempt with three service errors over a five point run, but the Hawks were able to finish the set and win it 25-21.  Becker would make several runs in the third set and keep it out of reach for the Owls, winning the match 3-0.

Aroz would record ten assists, while Jewett would lead the Owls with seven kills and eleven digs.  Williams would add 15 digs while Galvan chipped in 14 digs in the losing effort.

The Owls will compete in the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Autumn Invitational next weekend on Friday and Saturday.
