GORHAM, ME – The UMPI Volleyball team (1-6) continued their busy first weekend with matches against the Southern Maine Huskies (3-1) and the Castleton Spartans (1-2) on Sunday. Both matches were held at the University of Southern Maine, and the Owls dropped both matches three sets to zero.
USM def. UMPI – 3-0 (25-4, 25-18, 25-9)
The Huskies would set the tone early, winning the first set by a score of 25-4 and setting the tone for the rest of the match. Although the Owls recovered and battled in the second set, Southern Maine proved to be too much for the visitors.
The Huskies' Alayna McNally (FR, Marlton, NJ) would lead all players with ten kills. Abby Jewett (SR, Bass Harbor, ME) would lead the Owls with four kills. She would also add seven digs while Esmeralda Galvan (FR, Bullhead City, AZ) and Hannah Williams (SO, Park Falls, NS) would contribute with six digs.
Castleton def. UMPI – 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 25-20)
The Owls would be in a close fight with Castleton throughout, but weren't able to break through and end up on top, as the Spartans swept UMPI to end the weekend.
Jewett would lead the Owls in kills again, this match she would record eleven, and Williams would end up with six. Laura Aroz (FR, Tucson, AZ) proved to be effective in this one, ending the match with 13 assists. Sara Boies (FR, Baileyville, ME) had a strong effort with 14 digs, while Jasmine Pelletier (SO, Madawaska, ME) would have nine digs.
The Spartans would end with three different players in the double digits for kills. Cassidy Tedeschi (SR, Pascoag, RI) would lead all players with 13 kills, while teammates J'Leen Diaz (SR, West Hartford, CT) and Olivia Perkins (FR, Lancaster, MA) would finish with eleven and ten kills apiece.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, September 10th when they travel to Becker College. They will face Pine Manor College at 1 PM and Becker at 3 PM.
