BOSTON, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Soccer Team (5-6-2) dropped Sunday's decision to the Fisher Falcons (6-6-2) by a score of 6-3.
The game started off with a touch of bad luck for the Owls. Just 1:15 into the game, Fishers Camila Da Silva's (SR, Everett, MA) shot deflected off of an UMPI defender and bounced over the UMPI keeper into the net. The Owls would respond in the 30th minute, when senior Carla Halvorson (Easton, ME) would get an assist from Abby Deveau (JR, Littleton, ME) and tie the game at one goal apiece. The game would not stay that way long, as it took just two minutes for the Falcon offense to get another opportunity and Amanda Santiago (SO, Saugus, CA) would make sure that it counted, as she would score her fifth goal of the season to put the home team up 2-1. With time winding down in the first half, the Falcons would add to their lead as Da Silva found the net again in the 41st minute. The game would go to intermission with the Owls down 3-1.
The NAIA's leading goal scorer Julia Schojan (JR, Rochester, NY) got into the action to start the second half. Just over a minute had ticked off the clock before she found the back of the net to extend the Falcon lead. Her second goal in the 69th minute gave Fisher a 5-1 lead and put the Owls in a big hole. The Owls would show their resiliency and despite being down, they mounted a comeback effort. In the 84th minute Deliah Schreiber (FR, Lisbon, ME) would score a goal, and Halvorson would follow with her second just over three minutes later. With the lead down to two goals, Fisher once again turned to their leader and Schojan did not disappoint, netting her third goal of the game in the 88th minute to put it out of reach for the Owls.
The loss ends a five game streak in which the Owls did not lose a game, they were 4-0-1 in that stretch.
The Owls will end their regular season play on Saturday as they travel north to take on the University of Maine at Fort Kent. That game will start at noon. UMFK is ranked #1 in the USCAA in the latest poll, while UMPI is #16.
