Lawrence Senior, Hunter Mercier to Join Owls

Presque Isle, ME — Head Women's Basketball Coach Gavin Kane announces that senior Hunter Mercier from Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine has been accepted to the University of Maine at Presque Isle and will play basketball for the women's team next season. Mercier, a 4-year varsity player for the Bulldogs helped her team to a State Championship, a Northern Maine Championship, as well as to the Quarterfinals and Semi-finals, along with an overall record of 64-16 in her 4 seasons at Lawrence High School.

"We are incredibly pleased to have Hunter become an UMPI Owl", stated Kane. "I believe that she will make an immediate impact for our Women's Basketball team next year. She has excellent range and is an outside scoring threat that our team really needs. She can fill it up from the 3-point line but also, has the ability to drive it to the rim and score or dish off. Hunter is an aggressive player who will fit well into our system both offensively and defensively. She is a daughter of a long time coach and has a great feel and understanding of the game. She comes from a winning program and will definitely help us become successful consistently at UMPI."

Mercier averaged 14 points per game, 3.2 assists, 1.7 steals and 5.4 rebounds for Lawrence and led the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference in 3 pointers made as a Junior. "Hunter is a deadly shooter from the perimeter with the ability to get by defenders when they step out to guard her.  Her court presence and court awareness make her an outstanding offensive player.  On the defensive end of the court Hunter is a great help-side defender who is always in the right position," said Lawrence High School Coach Greg Chesley.

Hunter's High School team went 42 and 2 during her freshman and sophomore basketball seasons. She was also, a 4-year varsity Field Hockey player and a 3-year varsity softball player at Lawrence.

"I am looking forward to the educational and athletic opportunities that the University of Presque Isle has to offer.  Playing basketball for such an accomplished coach as Coach Kane is extremely exciting for me.  I can't wait to work with my teammates and all the wonderful people here at the University," stated Hunter Mercier.
