PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (1-7) were able to hang on for their first win of the season over the University of New Brunswick – St. John Seawolves (1-5) on Saturday evening. The Owls would take the victory by the score of 49-46.
Both teams would struggle out of the gate, as it would take the Owls over seven minutes to get on the scoreboard. The two teams would play to a 6-6 tie after one quarter. A 10-2 run for UMPI would give them the advantage late in the second quarter, and the host team would go to the break leading by a score of 20-12.
After opening up a ten-point lead off of a Rhylee Wright (SO, Frenchville, ME) three-point shot, the Seawolves would make a 10-3 run that would put them right back into the game. After the Owls converted some free throw opportunities, UNBSJ would get a big three from Sara Simkins (SR, Weldon, NB) to pull them within three. Teagan Laweryson's (SR, Moscow, ME) layup would make the score 33-28 in favor of the Owls going into the fourth quarter.
The Owls would never pull away, and the Seawolves would finally take advantage. With just 49 seconds remaining, Megan Baisley (SR, Quispamis, NB) would hit a jumper to tie the game at 46. The following possession resulted in a foul and the Owls would get convert on just one of the two attempts from the charity stripe. With a chance to take the lead, UNB St. John would turn the ball over, as Marissa Reagle (FR, Seattle, WA) would step in front of a pass and get credit for the steal. She would be fouled, but once again, the Owls would get a one for two from the line, and held just a two-point lead. The Seawolves would miss a chance to tie it up, and Wright would be fouled on the rebound. UMPI would add one more on her trip to the charity stripe, and the Seawolves would not get another look at tying up the game, as the Owls would hold on for a 49-46 win.
Wright would record a double-double, leading all scorers with 19 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. She would add six blocks to her night. Emilia Churchill (SO, Washburn, ME) would add seven points.
Simon and Baisley would lead the Seawolves with nine points.
These two teams face off again tomorrow afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
