PRESQUE ISLE, ME – On Senior Day the University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (7-15) beat the University of Maine at Fort Kent (16-10) for the first time since December of 2013. The Owls would win an intense and physical game by a score of 67-58.
An early 10-0 run by UMPI would put the Bengals in an early hole that they would have to fight out of. With just over a minute to play in the first quarter they would tie the game at 13, but the Owls would end the first and start the second quarter with 8 unanswered points. Though the home team would hold on to the lead for the rest of the half, the Bengals would stay close and go to the locker room with a score of 32-25.
The Owls would go cold to start the second half and would not score a point in the first five minutes of the third. While the Bengals did not exactly come out hot, their offense was able to grab a two-point lead with just over five minutes left in the third. After a big three-pointer by Kylee Alton (SR, Burnham, ME), both offenses would spring to life. The teams would trade the lead four times in the final minutes of the third quarter, and Fort Kent would hold a 42-41 lead going into the last period.
The Owls would briefly tie the game to start the fourth, but UMFK would retake the lead. With 5:16 remaining the Bengals would lead by five, and looked to have control of the contest. The Owls would get a layup by Rhylee Wright (FR, Frenchville, ME) on the next possession and create a turnover. A UMFK foul would put Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) on the line, who would make her first but miss the second. Wright would get an offensive rebound and was fouled on her put back attempt. Wright would hit both of her free throws to tie the game. After Bianca Guiterrez (JR, Indio, CA) hit her eighth three-pointer of the game, Wright had a chance to tie it on the other end with a three of her own. The shot was off the mark, but a foul put the freshman on the line for three attempts from the charity stripe. Wright would hit all three to tie the game once again. Another Wright free throw on the next possession followed by a UMFK turnover would set up Churchill to hit a crucial three-point basket to put the Owls up by two possessions. With time winding down, the Owls were able to hold on to the lead from the free throw line and take the 9-point victory at home.
Wright would end the game with 22 points and ten rebounds. Churchill would also have a big day, scoring 20 points and adding five assists. Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would record a double-double on her senior day, finishing with 12 points and 22 rebounds. Guiterrez was the hot hand for the Bengals, scoring 26 points on eight of 13 from behind the arc.
The Owls finish off their regular season schedule with a home game against Alfred State on Sunday, February 19. That game is scheduled for a noon tip.
