Owls Sink Clippers

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (6-15) swept their season series against Maine Machias (7-14) on Sunday in women's basketball action.  UMPI would win by a final score of 58-41.

Both teams started slow on offense but it would be the Clippers that would have a 3-point lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Owls defense would continue to pressure Machias in the second and hold them to just five points, allowing UMPI to take a 23-17 lead at the half.

The third quarter would be similar to the second, as the Owls would hit six of 13 from the field in that time period, while the visitors would shoot just 23.1%, allowing UMPI to build a 13-point lead at the end of the third.  The Clippers would not be able to get back into it, as the closest they would get is nine points in the fourth, and the Owls would get their sixth win of the season.

Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would lead the Owls with 18 points.  Freshman Rhylee Wright (Frenchville, ME) would tally another double-double, ending the game with 15 points and 17 rebounds.  Machias would be led by Alicen Brooks (JR, Stockton Springs, ME) who would score 16 points, grab five rebounds, and have four assists.

The Owls are at home on Sunday afternoon, as they will host the University of Maine at Fort Kent (15-9) for a noon tip.  The two teams met earlier this season and UMFK won by a score of 71-61.  Sunday will be the annual Think Pink basketball games.  UMPI Athletics will work with Relay for Life and raise money to be donated to the American Cancer Society.
