PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (4-10) hosted the SUNY Delhi Broncos (5-11) on Saturday and the Owls would end up taking a 56-45 decision.
The Owls would be down by as many as five in the first quarter, but would cut the deficit to two points at the end of the first. An 8-2 run midway through the second quarter would give the Owls a lead they would hold on to for the remainder of the game. UMPI would shoot 53.3% from the floor and create five Bronco turnovers in the second quarter to stay in control and go to the locker room with the score in their favor, 31-25, at the half.
The Owls would build as much as a 13-point lead in the third quarter, but a 9-0 SUNY Delhi run to end it would put them right back in it. The UMPI defense would step up its pressure in the fourth, and the Broncos would shoot just three of 20 from the floor in the final period, which allowed the home team to pull away. The Owls would outscore their opponent 14-7 in that fourth quarter on their way to a 11-point win.
Senior guard Sydney Churchill (Fort Fairfield, ME) would have a strong showing for the Owls, scoring 17 points on eight of 14 from the floor, while dealing out five assists, and collecting three steals. Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would score 14 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Rhylee Wright (FR, Frenchville, ME) would also grab seven rebounds, while Kylee Alton (SR, Burnham, ME) would collect six.
The Owls are back on the road and will meet up with in-state rival Central Maine Community College (15-1) on Wednesday. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 PM tip.
