PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (0-4) opened the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday. Central Maine Community College (9-0) would open up a lead in the second half and come away with an 82-56 victory.
After the Mustangs opened a game with an 11-2 run, the Owls would recover and shut down CMCC for the remaining five minutes, only allowing them to score two more points in the quarter. Meanwhile, Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would put pressure on the Mustang defense and get to the free throw line, connecting on six of those attempts. Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) and Kylee Alton (SR, Burnham, ME) would hit jumpers to help the Owls end the quarter in a 13-13 tie.
Churchill would give UMPI the lead to start the second quarter with a three-point basket, and the Owls had an opportunity to build a lead. They would go cold from the floor, and after holding a 20-18 lead the Mustangs would finish the half on a 12-3 run and take a seven-point lead into the locker room at the half.
CMCC would continue their run into the third quarter and go on to build an insurmountable lead. Halfway through the third quarter, the Owls would trail by as much as twenty as the Mustang full-court pressure would finally crack the home team, forcing them into too many turnovers to overcome. The Mustangs would not let the home team close the gap and held a double digit lead through the end, taking the 82-56 decision.
Hotham would lead all scorers with 22 points, going 12 of 12 from the free throw line. She would also grab six rebounds. Sydney Churchill would add eleven points, while Emilia Churchill (FR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would add five points, four rebounds, and four assists. Alton would add seven points off the bench.
The Owls next game is at home on December 3rd. They will host Maine Maritime Academy at noon.
