CASTINE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (0-2) dropped the opener of the Pepsi Mariner Classic to the host Maine Maritime Academy (1-1) by a score of 91-53.
The Owls were cold early from the floor, despite shooting just 27.3% from the floor in the first quarter, the deficit was a manageable nine points. UMPI would not find their rhythm in the second half and 22 first half turnovers would bury them by 21 points at intermission. The Owls would pick it up in the third quarter, getting themselves to the free throw line and shooting 36.8% from the floor, but the momentum would not carry over to the final period and the Mariners would cruise to a 91-53 victory.
Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would lead all scorers with 22 points, while grabbing nine rebounds. Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would add nine points, while Jessy Dickison (JR, Houlton, ME) and Rhylee Wright (FR, Frenchville, ME) would grab eight rebounds apiece.
The Owls will play in the consolation game of the Mariner Classic on Saturday against Rensselar at 1 PM.
