Owls Tripped Up by Celtics in Opening Game

Dubois, PA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's softball team made their third consecutive appearance in the USCAA National Softball Tournament on Monday afternoon.  It was the second year in a row the 6th seeded Owls would take on the 3rd seeded Celtics of Carlow University out of Pittsburgh, PA.

In the bottom of the first, with two outs and no one on, Sara Packard (Sr. St. Albans, ME) would strike out fellow pitcher Abby Stroud; however, Stroud would advance to first base on a pass ball keeping the inning alive.  The Celtics would capitalize on the inning driving two runs in on three hits, taking an early 2-0 lead after one.

In the fourth inning with the score 3-0, Jordi Legassie (Jr. Presque Isle, ME) would break up Stroud's perfect game singling to right field, which would be the lone hit on the day for the Owls.  Marissa Reagle (Fr. Seattle, WA) successfully sacrificed bunt, advancing Legassie into scoring position with one out.  Unfortunately, the Celtics would get out of the jam as the Owls would ground out twice to end the inning.

The Celtics would go on to win 8-0 in five innings improving their record to 19-15.  The Owls fall to 24-11, but will look to bounce back as they face Penn State Schuylkill in an elimination game at 12:00 pm Tuesday.
