CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Softball team (9-7) swept a four game weekend series with the Pine Manor Gators (2-4). The first game would be a tight 4-0 contest, and then the Owls would take control, ending the remaining three in five innings by scores of 18-1, 12-4, and 16-0.
Game 1 – UMPI 4, PMC 0
The Owls would get their first runs in the fourth when Jackie Peers (FR, Limestone, ME) would triple to drive in a run. She would later score on an error to put UMPI up by two. Emma Gogan's (FR, Truro, NS) single in the fifth would plate a third run, and Alexis Levesque (FR, Madawasa, ME) would drive in a run in the seventh. The Gators would put together their biggest threat in the bottom of the seventh when two base hits and an error would load the bases with no one out. A comebacker to the pitcher would get the first out at the plate, and two strikeouts would end the threat and the game.
Sara Packard (JR, St. Albans, ME) would give up just four hits and walk one while striking out nine in the game. Peers and Gogan would each go two for four with an RBI.
Game 2 – UMPI 18, PMC 1
An eight run second inning would break the game open and the Owls would score in every inning to run away with the day one nightcap. Levesque would drive in five runs with a two for three game. Ariel Williams (FR, Frisco, TX) would end up two for three with a double and three RBI, while Gogan would also collect three RBI in her two for four effort. Peers and Jordi Legassie (SO, Presque Isle, ME) would score four times in the game. Packard would strike out five in four innings of work.
Game 3 – UMPI 12, PMC 4
After both teams were held scoreless in the first, the Owls would send 11 batters to the plate in the second and collect five runs on seven hits. Three in the third and one in the fourth would give UMPI a 9-0 lead before the Gator bats were effective. Pine Manor would load the bases in the fourth, but only get one. The Owls would extend their lead in the top of the fifth with three runs, and Pine Manor would match them in the bottom half, but the game would end there, with the Owls taking an eight run victory.
Nicole Marucci (JR, Naples, ME) would go three for three in the game with a double, three RBI, and two runs. Levesque would go three for four with one RBI and four runs scored, while Gogan would end up three for five with two RBI.
Game 4 – UMPI 16, PMC 0
The Owls would score in every inning with a seven-run third inning being the knockout blow. Packard would pitch the entire game giving up just two hits and striking out seven. Her offense would give her plenty of support, pounding out 12 hits on their way to 16 runs. Peers would lead the charge offensively with a three for three game in which she would drive in two runs and score once. Williams, Esmeralda Galvan (FR, Bullhead City, AZ), and Brianna Losee (JR, Pittsfield, ME) would all collect two this in the contest.
The Owls will continue their season with a trip to SUNY Canton on Friday for a 3 PM doubleheader. Saturday they will travel to Lyndon State and then move on to face Maine-Farmington on Monday.
