Late Charge Not Enough

Late Charge Not Enough

NEW LONDON, CT – The Coast Guard Academy Bears (7-1) extended their winning streak to seven games with a win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (4-6).  A late charge by the Owls would fall short as the Bears would hold on to take the win by a score of 76-68.

Trailing by two midway through the first half, the Owls would go on a scoring drought that would give the Coast Guard Academy a chance to extend their lead.  A 15-2 run powered by the Bears shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half would put UMPI in a hole, and the host team would go into the locker room leading 43-26 at the half.

The UMPI defense made adjustments at the half, and slowed the Coast Guard attack.  After the Owls cut the deficit to 14, the Bears would go on a five minute stretch in which they would not convert a field goal attempt.  The scoring drought triggered an 11-1 run for UMPI, and the resilient Owls were able to close the gap to just four points with 5:54 remaining.  UMPI would continue to press, and two Wilburn Griffeths (SO, Queens, NY) would make the score 66-63 in favor of the Coast Guard Academy with 2:53 remaining.  Micah Baldez (SR, Lower Gywnedd, PA) would hit a three-pointer with 1:14 left that would be the decisive blow.  UMPI was forced to put the Bears on the free throw line and they would convert those opportunities to seal the victory.

The Owls were led by Kim Collins (SR, Oxon Hill, MD) who scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in his season debut.  Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) would score 12 points, collect seven rebounds, and contribute four assists to the team's effort.  Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) and Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would add 11 points, while Deandre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) would finish the game with ten points.
