Owls Second Half Run Pulls Them Close, Black Bears Hang On

BANGOR, ME – The Owls (3-4) would fight back against their NCAA Division I opponents on Tuesday night, cutting the deficit to single digits in the second half.  The University of Maine Black Bears (2-7) would eventually pull away to claim victory by the final score of 75-55.

The Black Bears would get hot early, coming out of the gate on a 20-3 run, looking as though they were going to control the matchup.  The Owls would regain their composure and start their offense, not allowing U Maine to pull away any further.  Both teams would run into a scoring drought near the end of the first half, going almost four minutes without a point scored.  The Black Bears would take a 40-20 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Owls would come out swinging in the second half.  Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) would hit a three-point attempt on the first possession of the half, and Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would finish strong at the rim and get fouled to convert a three-point play.  Harris would get fouled on a jumper that would fall for another three-point possession, and Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) would lay one in to cut the Black Bear lead to nine points.  The UMPI defense would force four turnovers during that stretch, helping spark the 11-0 run by the Owls.

U Maine would turn the tables, going on a 12-2 run to create a gap once again.  The Black Bears would build a 25-point lead with just under eight minutes to play, and were able to fend off the Owls advances for the rest of the game.  The Owls would fall by a final score of 75-55.

Kevin Collins would lead all scorers with 18 points, while also grabbing six rebounds.  Harris would end the matchup with 14 points, while Chacho would score nine and collect eight rebounds.

The Owls travel to the Boston area this weekend and take on Pine Manor on Saturday.  Sunday they will visit the Fisher Falcons.  Both games are scheduled for a 1 pm tip.
