BROOKLYN, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Baseball team (4-29) saw their season come to an end on Thursday after a two run rally in the bottom of the 8th by CCNY (11-21) would give the Beavers a 2-1 victory in the play-in game of the CUNYAC Tournament.
The Owls would take the lead in the third. Matt Cauchon (JR, Kingston, MA) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. He would later score on a groundball to short, with the RBI being credited to Matt Curry (JR, Caribou, ME).
UMPI starting pitcher Saul Nunez (JR, Mapleton, ME) would keep CCNY off the board and get himself out of trouble throughout the contest. The Beavers would leave nine runners on base throughout the game, including leaving runners at second and third in the fourth and sixth innings.
In the bottom of the 8th a leadoff triple from Adrian Pena (SR, Bronx, NY) would bring an end to the day for Nunez. Stephen Peters (FR, Peekskills, NY) would single to left to score the first run of the game for CCNY. He would score the winning run off of a single from Anthony Cacchione (JR, Drexel Hill, PA). The Beavers' Cal Romano (SO, Bronx, NY) would get the Owls in order in the ninth to finish off his complete game effort from the mound.
Jesus Garcia (JR, Jewett City, CT) would go two for three in the game with a triple. Brad Patterson (FR, Harker Heights, TX) went two for four with a double for the Owls. Nunez got a no-decision on the mound, despite pitching seven strong innings and striking out seven while walking two.
