5-run 7th Inning Helps Pilgrims Sweep Owls
(HENNIKER, NH) – New England College baseball took two games from the visiting UMaine-Presque Isle Owls Friday afternoon. The Pilgrims shutout the Owls 6-0 in game one and followed that with a come from behind seventh inning 6-5 game two victory.
With the wins New England College improves to 15-8 overall, while the losses drop Presque Isle 2-19 on the season.
In game one the Pilgrims would plate two runs in the second, one in the third and tack on three in the fourth inning en route to the 6-0 victory. Leading the way for the Pilgrims was pitcher Chris Wallace(Manchester, N.H.) who pitched seven shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out nine.
In game two the Pilgrims would rally for five runs in the seventh inning to pick up the 6-5 walk-off victory.
Pinch hitter Scott Fortune (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) would open the seventh inning with a single followed by Chris Biskup (South Portland, Maine) who would reach on an error. After two Pilgrim strike outs, NEC'sChristopher Smith and Brandon Adorono would come up huge with back-to-back singles followed by a hit batter and a two-run single by Pierce Byrd knotting the game at 5-5. NEC's Juan Berrios (Ft. Myers, Fla.) would then come through with a single to right field plating the game-winning run as Caputo would score easily from third base.
Leading the way for UMPI was Chris Villoria (Jr./Caracus, Venezuela) who was 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs batted in. Presque Isle's Ted Walker (So./Caribou, ME) belted a solo homerun for the Owls.
Anthony Batchelder (Jr./West Enfield, ME) had a great outing going through 6 innings. Before starting the 7th, Batchelder had held the Pilgrims to 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 6. Andy Brown (So./Princeton, ME) took the loss giving up 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning.
The Owls will play another doubleheader on Saturday April 7th at Southern Maine Community College. Game times are 1pm and 3pm.
